Tethered Cap-Gradual Deployment in the Chinese Market

Oct 23, 2024
Tethered caps for Tetra Pak carton packages

From May 27th to 28th, the 2024 China (International) Dairy Technology Expo was held in Changsha, and green and low-carbon was also a highlight of the exhibition. At the exhibition, Tetra Pak China brought the latest achievements in packaging technology equipment, packaging materials, finished product applications and other aspects.

In the Tetra Pak exhibition area, a "tethered bottle cap that cannot be removed" attracted everyone's attention: a small ring was added at the connection between the mouth of the beverage bottle and the bottle body to make the bottle cap and the packaging one.

Tetra Pak staff introduced on-site that the tethered cap is not only easy to open and drink repeatedly, but also easier to recycle. Thanks to the unique design, the tethered cap uses less plastic than conventional caps of the same type. If a plant-based tethered cap, that is, an tethered cap made of sugarcane as raw material, is selected, the proportion of renewable materials in the packaging can also be increased, reducing the carbon footprint of the packaging.

It is understood that although the tethered cap looks easy to achieve, because consumers are very close to their facial features when drinking, it is necessary to consider the fit between the opening diameter and the human body, which also varies in different regional markets. Currently, Tetra Pak’s European customers have launched products with integrated lids on the market, and Tetra Pak will gradually deploy them in the Chinese market in the future.
